Realized on last viewing...

...how improbable it was that she found herself in Renato's store, with Mauro's unintentional guidance, after seeing Renato at the Piazza San Marco, and that she would buy the same style goblet that her acquaintance did, and that that acquaintance would show up with her glassware just as Renato was present, and that she would insist on showing Jane the glassware in his presence.

Obvious story devices, but they work; people accept the story.

Ha... yes, very coincidental. As you said though, the film is so charming and beautiful that it's easy to look past these things.

True. But I think it's very easy to accept the story - or simply look past these coincidences - because it's not totally outside the realm of possibility (Venice is, speaking relatively, a very small place, after all), and because Lean does not really dwell too much on the circumstances of their meeting. It's what follows what matters to him - and to the viewers.

Coincidences happen and I think it was the shock of this particular one that gave her the feeling that it was all fated and meant to be. It gave her permission.
