This is a crazy film, only for aircraft/cold war historyfans

I have seen this film several times and everytime I see it I can't believe it.

I would not compare the USA (or Britain my country)with the USSR but a Soviet film of the same era would be hard pressed to be GUNG HO as as this one.

The film looks beautiful, everything is either airforce blue or shiny silver.
The planes are beautiful but the plot is not so good, they can't show the real missions they trained for.

The topic of people called back into service during and after the Korean war was a real one on both sides of the atlantic.

Not that it matters all that much but the characters were WWII veterans.

The movie was made as a little propoganda during the beginning of the cold war to assure Americans that we had our act together. SAC only existed to be able to "control" our ICBMs and was deactivated in 1992 (I think it coincided w/ the fall of the Soviet Union.)

ICBMs didn't exist until long after SAC had been established. Before that (and the reason for this film) was its mission to drop the Hydrogen bomb, and nuclear bombs on the USSR, in response to them bombing us.

I know it’s been years since people wrote comments on this movie but I think the film was pretty candid in showing the griping of officers and airmen about the rigors of a job with SAC. I can’t imagine a USSR propaganda film in 1950’s show these complaints of service members and giving personal opinions questioning whether their service was worth it.

Not to mention the plot emphasis for half the film was a design problem with the starring aircraft that causes a fuel leak and engine fires that can engulf the whole wing. Hardly the stuff of Soviet-style propaganda.
