Bergman and Allen

Another thread touched on the influence of Bergman on Woody Allen.
I'd like to look at that more specifically.
Woody Allen admired Bergman immensely, he has said so in interviews. I've seen 18 Bergman movies and 31 Woody Allen movies, and I would say especially when he had been with Mia Farrow a while, W. Allen seemed to lean more toward making films with a serious, Bergmaniesque message.
When he made Interiors he even said, "I'm making a movie that will out-Bergman Bergman" or something like that. However, while he made a few depressing movies, he was never able to attain the incredible dramatic impact that Bergman is capable of, e.g. in Cries and Whispers.
After W.A. broke with Farrow, he seemed to leave that need to be like Bergman behind, for the most part. However, his movies since then, while comedies, do often have a serious message, often delivered in an ironic way.
