the funniest scene/ MM reference in the film

Maybe it's not THE funniest scene, but the most ironic is towards the end where Sonny Tufts shows up to get the paddle and Tom Ewell gets real paranoid and starts overexplaining and mentions "...the blonde in the shower. For all I know, it could be Marilyn Monroe!!"

Was this is in the script? Or an improvised nod to Marilyn's immense popularity at the time? First time I saw the movie, I was tickled beyond words because, well, it really WAS Marilyn Monroe in the shower and suddenly the line between reality and the story was blurred!

Anything more to this other for a laugh? Anyone have a recollection of a similar acknowledement with another actor/film? Thanks!

"Airplane" has a similar instance where the co-pilot is recognized as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Myra Breckinridge is another movie where they did that. At the end when we learn it was Rex Reed's character, Myron, who dreamed he had a sex-change and was Raquel Welch and Raquel just happened to play the Myra part.

The funniest instance of this is in His Girl Friday, when Cary Grant quickly describes the Ralph Bellamy character as someone who "looks like that guy from the movies... Ralph Bellamy."

Of course, a significant portion of Ocean's 12 is built on such a joke.
