Owf Weedersehn

Okay, even though John Wayne is playing a German sea captain of a merchant ship in this film, no one could have seriously expected him to perfect a German accent to speak his dialogue with. He's the Duke, after all, and not Laurence Olivier! But when at one point he pronounces "Auf Wiedersehn", his pronunciation is glaringly awful, exactly like in my subject line. Now, anyone who has had even minimal, basic instruction in the German language knows that the W in "Wiedersehn" is pronounce with a soft V sound. Almost like you just continue the final F sound in "Auf". Did absolutely no one notice this jarringly bad pronunciation, or did no one have the courage to ask Wayne to correct it in a second take? Whatever the case, its a classic howler!

I don't think anyone in this film even tried to affect a German accent, least of all Wayne and Turner.
