dark drama, wonderful!

This is one of my favorite williams' plays....I think Ms. Maganani's performance is incredible... I liked it allot better than her one in the Fugitive Kind...the only other time she was onscreen in a Williams movie.

First of all, this movie never did make up its mind wether it's a dark drama or a light hearted comedy, which is its appeal for me, and secondly, Anna was in another Williams movie - Wild is the Wind co-starring Anthony Quinn.

Actually, "Wild is the Wind" has a screenplay by Arnold Schulman and is based on an Italian novel, Williams was not connected with it. I thought Anna Magnani was magnificent in this role and fully deserved her Oscar. Once in a while her heavy accent was a bit difficult to decipher, but what a force of nature she was! While no other actress could convey fiery rage like her, my favorite moments were when she was quiet, flirting with Burt Lancaster or being amused by something. She must really have been something to American audiences in the mid-50's! She was frankly overweight, had dark circles under her eyes, sometimes was downright unkempt-looking and frumpy. No Hollywood glamour girl treatment for her, just reality, running the gamut of emotions in naturalistic, heartrending fashion. I wish she had had more great roles on film.

Indeed, I was wrong about ""Wild is the Wind". I was probably thinking of "The Fugitive Kind", which definitely is based on a Williams play, but got them mixed up at the time.
