One thing nobody seems to talk about...

One problem between Jim and his family in this movie is still alive and kicking between kids and their parents today. Nobody ever talks about it but it's so obvious, Jim's whole family is too busy trying to be his friend, trying to get him to like them, to do their job as parents. Did anybody else find it sickening the way the mother and grandmother seem to compete for Jim's praise about the food they made for him for school?

what about the fact that Buzz could have just hit the brakes and the whole movie would have taken a different turn. Judy would have had to fall in love with Jim for other reasons besides that her boyfriend is dead.
If your sleeve is caught in the door handle, slam the brakes and cut the wheel to the left (or the opposite of the side that Jim Stark was on)... he was supposed to be some expert on playing chicken. Guess not lol

Notice how they squeal the tires on dirt also ? LOL ! The length of time it took them to reach the cliff compared to the wide shot of where they were positioned when the race started didn't work. Too much time devoted to him wrestling with the stuck jacket. If they cut it by a few seconds it would have been more believable that he didn't have time to react (braking as you pointed out).

the brakes were disabled

If he hit the brakes the car would have skidded over the cliff. Either way he's dead. I heard somewhere that a car can skid the length of a football field before stopping.
