The Cardinal

This film had a great effect on me too when I saw way back in 1956. Guiness's restrained and dignified portrayal on a brave churchman had me, a callow youth, in tears.

Sadly Cardinal Minzenty was not alone at that time, brother primates behind the Iron Curtain were also facing defamation, harrassment, imprisonment or banishment.

I agree with Fr George, we really should see this film again - problem - where do we find another Alex Guiness?

I believe Sir Alec was received into the Roman Catholic Church.

No, it's more Midzenty than Stepinac. Guinness may have looked more like Stepinnac but that is merely a coincidence.

This is wrong. When he was arrested and tried, Stepinac was not a cardinal, but merely Archbishop of Zagreb. Besides, he was not a "hero of resistance" and was never arrested by Gestapo, because he was a collaborator of the Croatian Nazi junta. He was also never tortured by communists, but released from prison and held in the house arrest in his home village.
