What is symbolism of all the clothing?

There are a lot of other scenes that involve clothing, dress fittings, returning clothing, criticizing others clothing, not having the appropriate clothing. I am going to take a stab at it and say the clothing are layers of pretense. That Madge (or whatever her name was) was worshipped for her looks, her beauty pageant crown and gowns, but that was all fake, a pretense, a version of her life that others clothed her with.
