Alan's Father understood Hal

I am always struck by Alan's father's reaction to the scene that took place in his own house that began when Hal returned the car. He saw through his son's assertions about Hal.

At the end of the scene, when they both watched the police drive away after Hal, Alan revealed that his father was probably happy that his relationship with Madge was over. The father denied it. The look on his face seemed to show that he either understood Hal or understood why everything happened the way it did. He clearly ran the town.
