Remarkable wide screen composition and production design....

For an actor-director who specialized in a TV show that mostly dealt in medium to extreme close-ups, I'm always impressed by Webb's assured and striking use of Cinemascope in "Pete Kelly's Blues"....he knew how to fill a widescreen frame and how stage and edit a powerful forceful action sequence....and the movie has the flavorful look of the period...Webb smartly borrowed a Disney studios production designer (the speakeasy, the ballroom and the backrooms are marvelous constructions...and that insane asylum set looks like something that Ken Adam could have concocted for a Bond film. I never miss a chance to see the film whenever it runs on TCM....
