Its Sad

It's sad that nearly 12% of voters have voted 1 to this masterpiece. When will the audience mature?? Damn, these kids.

In a world where having a low attention span is considered a "cool trait", it's quite expected.

reply

Don't look for any philosophical or profound trait in today's youth.
A teenager today (not all are the same) will not appreciate sociological movies such as this one.
You gotta give'em Kathy Ireland or Pamela Anderson.

I don't think it is fully adult to care deeply about the ranking a movie gets on a website. Better to care about the movie itself and its impact on you. You could share it and recommend it to people you know. That is the best way.

I find it strange, to say the least, that those who would vote [1] for this film would actually have seen it. I assume that there's something else going on with the voting.

there are a lot of people who would see one movie, not like it, then vote all the directors movies a 1. i never look at 1s or 10s because the 2-9 are much more sinsere voters. i myself gave this movie a 5, well it was intresting, but thats all, it didnt pull me in as some woudl expect.

For the record, I gave it a "10". It's one of the most beautiful and moving pieces of cinema I've ever seen, and stands up well after repeated viewings. And, many of the later films by Ray are as good.

I gave this film 4 out of 10. 1 point for having the courage to make an film that was very different from the usual Indian films of the time, 1 point for perseverance in the face of funding difficulties, another point for the film's cultural impact at the time and 1 more in appreciation of the fact that no white saviour was present (unlike boyhood).

This film just did not engage me really, because i found the characters underdeveloped. Also, I was frustrated by the themes that were hinted at and then left, such as the wife's unfulfilled dreams, durga's appetite for stealing and the underlying reasons dad's absence, both physical and emotional.

I do think there is some merit in the critism that poverty was romanticised. There were no children crying with hunger, or relationships destroyed by grinding privation.

With each rite of passage that I saw, such as durga mourning the loss of her friend when she got married, I was struck by other films and documentaries that shown such moments more effectively.

I'll watch the other two and see if they are more powerful.

i seriously dont have a problem with someone giving this movieage 1 out of 10 because it then speaks more bout that person than his 1 star for the movie. but i do have a problem with someone who understands the movie well and then gives it a 5 or says it to be average.
i gave it a 10..tried for more but the star meter didn't worked.

its a ten for me now.

when I saw this when I was 10/11 it was a one or a two at most. I was bored to death. so you might have people who are rating the movie based on what a remembered experience and not a recent one. what lazy, selfish people!

you definitely need to be a mature filmwatcher (irrespective of age) to like this film... there arent any cars turning into robots!

It was a 10/10 for me the first time I saw it (I was already an adult then) and it is still a 10/10 for me when I saw it again.

I explicitly compared it to Sica's "Bicycle Thieves (1948)" which I watched for comparison directly before "Pather Panchali (1955)". For me PP works far more better than BT.

But I agree with bsharporflat that it is futile "to care deeply about the ranking a movie gets on a website. Better to care about the movie itself and its impact on you. You could share it and recommend it to people you know. That is the best way."

I totally agree. This film is a solid 10/10 and it's obvious that this film was influenced by the Italian neorealist movement.

I hesitated, gave it a 7, maybe should be an 8. I need to see it again, this I know for sure. The last hour especially was strong, more poignant, more beautiful, a real elevation.
