Why don't Indians vote this into Top 250?

Instead of average films such as 3 Idiots.
Dont they/you watch their/your own classics?
This is a true masterpiece!!

reply

Because they are simpletons. A work of art such as this is will never be appreciated by the masses in India. They want Dhoom 4.

reply

Cause many Indians do not know about it. neither do they care that much.

reply

Many here don't even know who Satyajit Ray is :(

reply

It's sad to hear that. These films are really great. Maybe now with the new Criterion release more people will see and praise them. :)

reply

Yeah, might reach more people overall but wouldn't affect much of India's population.

reply

Indians , even rich ones, have no knowledge about Criterion.

The only way Pather Panchali can reach the IMDb top 250 is if the Engineering graduates in India gang up and vote it. Not going to happen.

The film is in Bengali language like most of Ray's films. A language spoken largely in the state of Bengal. So, that limits its scope. India is like Europe with several regional languages. Just as it is unrealistic to assume that a Polish language film will be widely viewed and appreciated in Spain or Italy or Sweden, it is unrealistic to think that Ray's Bengali films will be accessible to the rest of India.
