It Just Didn't Work

I borrowed the 'Our Miss Brooks' radio show in CD format from my library, and put them on my MP3 player to listen to at my convenience, that's how I got turned on to this movie.

This movie stunk! There was no chemistry between Eve Arden and any of her potential suitors, a real fail for the casting director (and the viewer). I got the feeling the only reason this was made was because the participants needed to make a mortgage or car payment. I hope to see the television show in syndication one day, It must have been better than this.

I thought it worked beautifully. We were finally treated to Connie getting her happy ending. Maybe if you actually saw the tv series before viewing the film (in the correct order) you'd feel differently. It was good to see Mr. Boynton being featured a bit more in the Our Miss Brooks film. It's best to enjoy the film for what it was. Rather than to overanalyze it.

Miss Brooks never got her happily-ever-after in the series, so Miss Brooks' relationship with Mr. Boynton being prominently featured in the movie makes perfect sense for those of us who wanted to see Connie get her happy ending.

Our Miss Brooks is forever the definitive classic to me. Eve Arden & company worked just beautifully. It's no wonder she won best radio comedienne of 1948/9. I never tire of listening to the show. I also greatly enjoy the tv series. It's nice putting faces to the voices. Though Joel Samuels whose appeared in a handful of the radio episodes is a huge mystery. No trace of information or photo of him, either in the OTR star archives or any of the Our Miss Brooks logs. Only his listed episode credits. He portrayed Mike & Danny's Pop, Mr. Gillis in the Twin Orphans & Mr. Murdoch in the Jiffy Vacuum episodes. Loved his soothing voice.

Whether it's the original radio show, television series or this cute theatrical outing, Our Miss Brooks is timelessly enjoyable. And as far as I'm concerned, the more we see of Mr. Boynton, the better.

How right you are seventiesflicksgirl. What satisfaction to see Our Miss Brook finally get her man. I was in my early teens when I watched this on TV. ( I even had a teacher named Miss Brooks, but she was a much older maiden lady.) Anyway, this show was spot on. I become quite annoyed to hear comments from readers naysaying movies when they don't have the background for understanding it and base their opinions on modern viewing.

What were you expecting; Streetcar, On the Waterfront, Some Like It Hot, Rear Window? It's just a light hearted 85 minutes. Not something I would have in my collection, but it wasn't a waste of my hour and a half. Like I said, what were you expecting?
