Not sure what the strategy was when Mitchum's character told Lillian Gish's character that he would be back at dark after she chased him away with the shotgun.

I think he meant, why did he TELL her he'd be returning & when. It made no sense.

Sociopaths are too sure of themselves, that's how they get caught, he probably figured they'd spend that whole time cowering and quivering, he didn't really think she'd have the guts to face off with him and shoot him.
