one of the truly great suspensful films ever,,Robert Mitchum was bravura,as was Ms Gish,,why no Oscar Nominations for either of them or the film,,,and director Mr Laughton,,,this is cinema at its very best
The elements that were the most worthy of an Oscar nomination were Lillian Gish, Robert Mitchum (but it was a very crowded year, Sinatra, Borgnine, Tracy and Dean gave great performances, I don't know about Cagney) then the editing and the cinematography.
But I don't think Laughton's directing was worth an Oscar, being a director also means you can take the best out of the actors, and make them convey the right emotions, the kids' performances were uneven and sometimes very awkward
