WEHT The Coutiers + Their Kidnappers?

I quite enjoy movies that are based on true stories. I was surprised that this movie started out with showing us a photograph of the real life family, and at the end of the movie, the TCM host informing us that the kidnapper(s) sued, claiming that the movie ruined their chances of an appeal.

I wonder whatever happened to the entire coutier family after their ordeal....(I assume that both Mr. and Mrs. Coutier are both deceased), where are their children today? And what were their kidnappers sentenced to? Ever released? If so, did they return to a life of crime? Where are they today if they are still alive. And what liberties with the truth of this story did the film take?

Unfortunately, a google search brings up nothing about this true crime story.
