I just could`nt stand the bad acting in this one. For a while, I laughed, but after the guys came back to the house the next day, and the kids were at the table, not even acting frightened by these thugs, I gave up and turned it off. This was dumb....give me Plan 9 From Outer Space!
This actually is on par with that. The acting is bad, and the script ....actually funny! I`ll give it another try again...for laughs.

I played with The Desperate Hours on TMC tonight. Very interesting seeing similar themes in different scenarios and different family types.

I had more sympathy for the Courtiers of Night Holds Terror than the Hilliards of The Desperate Hours. Mainly because the Courtiers were less annoying and more practical. Less playing the hero and more focusing on realistic actions.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

Thurber, I have to agree with you. After viewing 'The Desperate Hours', an outstanding film, I was excited about seeing this movie with a similar theme. What a let down: it was dated and corny and I also turned it off after less than thirty minutes.
I taped 'Ransom' with Glen Ford; let's see if I do better with this one, I'll watch it later this weekend.

susan8one, It`s nice to know that someone here can see how bad this was. Someone actually thought that this was better than "The Desperate Hours." To each thier own....
What did you think of "Ransom?
ME? I thought it was pretty good.

Hi Thurber!

Well, will you believe I haven't been able to see 'Ransom' yet?! I am getting backed up on my movies. I also have 'Detective Story' with Kirk Douglas and 'On the Waterfront' waiting in the wings.

I'll let you know what I think when I am able spare a couple of hours!

But, this movie: oh, brother, I stand my original opinion. Better than 'Desperate Hours'? Laughable!!

This movie is not a masterpiece but it is superior to DESPERATE HOURS for two very simple reasons: 1) the on-location shooting for everything in the movie which brought a much-needed credibility and immediacy to the story and 2) contrary to other opinions here, the great casting of the hoodlum trio, especially John Cassavetes and Vince Edwards who were both convincingly psychopathic, much more so than the actors in THE DESPERATE HOURS. DESPERATE HOURS had a stagebound feel to it all the way through the picture and, though I am a huge Bogart fan, his portrayal of the hardened criminal is not as scary as Edwards and Cassavetes (both of whom projected an IN COLD BLOOD-type or Charlie Starkweather-type menace that Bogart did not). Likewise, hostage head of the family Jack Kelly was no Olivier as an actor, but he was always very convincing as an everyday kind of average American Joe and deserved more of a career. His biggest claim to fame turned out to be portraying James Garner's brother in the original "Maverck" TV series.

I agree with you, Chris. Once you accept it's not a masterpiece but a nice little ride into a tight script, pragmatic characters and neat location shots, you're in for a good time. There were unintended funny moments in it too, like when the TV reporter decides to drop a few hints on what usually happens to kidnappers in his evening broadcast. You'd almost expect him to go ".... if you know what I mean, of course......" (wink wink)
