All about the Fosse

I saw this movie for the first time about six months ago and what I went away remembering about it was Mr. Fosse. That challenge dance he does with Tommy Rall in the alley is AMAZING and it is worth sitting through the rest of the film for this sequence alone. Fosse's spirited and unique choreography is probably the best thing about this film, not to mention his outstanding dancing.

I always saw a little Fosse in some of Michael Jackson's moves.

Well said. I was amazed watching the film at the precision and control Bob Fosse had over his body. I loved all the "hat" and "hands" moves. Really his dancing was the only worthwhile aspect of the film considering the Bernstein version had much better and memorable songs.

I love the dancing in this film.

So far as Fosse in particular, all I can add is, Broadway shows will never be the same without him. It seems there’s no longer any choreographer in stage capable or willing to put the effort providing individual or ensemble dance numbers as evocative or precise as Fosse taught them to.

I miss seeing that level of skill on Broadway. Keeps me away from anything they slap his name on. Waiting for some outstanding dancer to give me hope that I’ll some day see dance of that quality on-stage again.

Once shown routinely in the Chicago TV metro market in the 1960's-1970's, it's great to see "My Sister Eileen" in C-Scope format and with a color corrected print. Especially interesting is seeing Bob (Robert in this film) Fosse's choreography in it; lots of dance clues in it which show which way he was headed dance-wise. Likewise, he makes sure that everyone looks terrific. Nice job. I take it that he headed for Broadway and "The Pajama Game" either right before or after the film was made.

Agreed. Just watched for the first time, and I couldn't take my eyes off him. His performance and choreography made the film for me. I love him so, so much.
