Elysium

Elysium, one of the Limbo Islands is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Island of the blessed. It is here that Mister Roberts brings the crew for Liberty, it is also the place where, Mister Roberts makes a deal with the Devil. It is ironic of all the men aboard that ship, the one the most deserving never took one step onto the shores of Paradise. Mister Roberts was always his brothers keeper and fittingly he never thought of himself first and was the type of man and role model that would live forever in the minds of those men when the War was long over. But one wishes, in looking back how sweet it would have been if he could have just that one last night to feel what it was to be human, with tropical breezes playing over him sitting in a bar, with a good friend passing the time with delightful tropical breezes playing over him-so far from home, so far from the War.
Elysuim also stands for judgment in the afterlife-the place of the most honored-the blameless heroes. Those few who lived a life without regret. Whose every action was for a noble purpose.

Great post. Time to read Melville again.
