I'm 22, and this is my second favorite movie. (Yankee Doodle Dandy is first, James Cagney was incredible as George M. Cohan.)

I saw this film on AMC with my mom, and I loved it! It is a classic! Oh yeah and I'm 21, saw it for the first time last year. I was reading about Henry Fonda on his trivia page and people described him as cold and frequently angry off set. Hard to imagine that from all his roles playing the soft spoken man of reason (this film and 12 Angry Men). I wonder if Once Upon a Time in the West was more his real attitude... anybody know more about his personal life?

Is it available on DVD?

Yes, it is. :) I don't know what stores carry it, but Amazon.com has it.

I'm 20 and I've been a fan for years. I made all my friends watch it during one of the snow days that school was cancelled for, so I'm spreading the word. Few people in my age group have respect for the classics...poor children.

Well, I'm not young, anymore... I'm 37. I did first watch this with my Grandfather (who was in the Allied Merchant Navy in WWII) when I was about 16. The movie touched my heart, especially when I saw my Grandpa tear up at the end. He was on a more 'action-oriented ship,' than the one portrayed in "Mister Roberts" but it all rang true to him and subsequently, me.

I just watched the movie again, 21 years later and have the same appreciation for the story and characters. Living and working in the civilian sector, I can only but empathize with the characters in "Mister Roberts." From my Grandpa's stories, so similar to this movie (except for the enemy contacts), it still hits me in the heart to see what they (and what many of the real Merchant Marines) had to go through; long stretches of boredom punctuated by short moments of excitement (shore leave or enemy aircraft/ships).

So, even though I'm not young anymore... I had watched it as a young person and loved it. I told all my friends about it at the time but none of them watched it. I felt, and still feel privileged to have seen it, again, just now (I still get a little weepy at the end but eh, the performances warrant that).

Excuse me, I have to go call my Grandpa :P
