Why So Much Hate For Alan Ladd

Several of the reviews disparage Ladd for his lack of height in ways that the equally short Jimmy Cagney, EG Robinson, George Raft and John Garfield never were.

Why so many references to midgets, standing on milk crates, etc.? Ladd was taller than Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman, yet those two never get the abuse Ladd gets.

What matters is what's on the screen. This movie wasn't one of Ladd's best, but he did make a few great ones. Ladd was great in Shane. You think it was all director George Stevens doing? Then how come "Giant" isn't nearly the classic "Shane" is?
