which version has the best picture and audio quality?

I have seen there are a few versions knocking about for pretty cheap where as iv only seen the special edition version for more than £10. Anyone know if the special edition version has the better picture and audio quality and is worth paying the extra for it?

Cheers

I'd love to know the answer to the same question, except for NTSC releases. Amazon has a slew of them, and one reviewer particularly trashed the quality of one of the releases.

It would be nice to know which version has the best quality.

I recently acquired another DVD of this film, and the print quality is just as bad as the first one I purchased (about 2 years ago).

I am very hesitant to buy another DVD until I can find out which one is "THE GOOD ONE."

...so, I'm joining the chorus here...
If anyone knows the answer to this, we're all waiting.

I'm currently reading the original book.

Algren hated the movie. He thought it was a total bastardization, and washed his hands of it.

The book is incredibly well written. Not for the squeamish. Give it a try.

The quality of the "dollar store" DVD (with "Suddenly" on the same DVD) is very poor.

I bought one at that level. Had to get rid of it, as the picture quality was worse than the version I had on VHS, recorded from the TV. That's the problem with it being out of copyright (along with Night of the Living Dead and Corman's Little Shop of Horrors); seemingly anyone can release a copy if they have a print of the film.

The 2 Disc Special Edition and the Warner Bros. release both come from the best source currently available, IMO...

Agreed, I bought the other two poor qualiy ones.... the two disc special edition is vastly superior.

I watched a copy from the 'Frank Sinatra Collection' that my library had. I don't know if there will be individual copies but box set usually are priced around $30-$50 and it is worth it! The DVD also had the original theatrical trailer and it has the same picture quality it was released in and it is so grainy! The collection really has a great restoration!

Me too [Sep 2011]. I purchased the Region 1 Warner Home Video released May 13 2008 DVD from Amazon U.S. I found the transfer quite good (neither jittery nor dark nor washed out nor any funky gaps), and the audio flawless (the preserved original mono soundtrack sounded quite good to me ..even though I'm accustomed to hearing 5.1 audio downmixed for my stereo headphones). (Also, it's nice watching this in the originally filmed "widescreen" format, which few other releases provide.)

Beware the Region 4 DVD from "MRA Entertainment" dated 2003. The source is obviously a very scratchy old print with muddy sound. No extras or commentary either.

Then the problem is greed, not the lack of copyright.
