Doris deserved the Oscar for this film!

Doris gives her greatest performance in thes film!! Why wasn't she nominated?

Does anybody know why she wasn't nominated? She was much better than most of the

nomimated ladies that year!!

This was definitely one of the great mysteries of the Academy over the years...they nominated Cagney ut did not nominate Doris for some reason. I agree that this film did indeed contain her finest performance...Doris did some of her best acting in this film and it deserved at least the recognition of a nomination that year if not the Oscar. Now, I have never seen THE ROSE TATTOO, the film for which Anna Magnani won the Oscar that year, but I still think Doris at least deserved a nomination.

Doris Day and James Cagney BOTH deserved the Oscar for their performances. They were awesome together.

Day's acting wasn't all that. Susan Hayward could act rings around her, as could Anna Magnani. My favorite Day performance is Midnight Lace and even in that she wasn't a great actress. She shouldn't have been on the same set as James Carney.

I'm not generally a huge fan of Doris Day as an actress but I certainly feel that this was her finest performance, of those I have seen. She matches Cagney's great work, which is high praise indeed. A nomination, at least, would have been well-earned.

I don't think anyone was likely to beat Magnani that year - a combination of legendary actress + breakthrough (Hollywood) role + Tennessee Williams would be quite an obstacle to overcome.

But she should've been nominated. And Day was superb at both comedy and dramas, and she could dance. She was
also one of the finest singers of the 20th century.

She is also superb in "The Man that Knew Too Much" and "Midnight Lace", even though the latter is a hokey thriller.

What's remarkable is that Day wanted to be a topnotch dancer, but an accident prevented her from becoming a
seriously trained one. So she just "started singing." Secondly, she was a highly successful band singer, and then
was offered a Warner Brothers movie contract. She was never given one acting lesson; she just showed up
and gave an enchanting and natural performance in "Romance on the High Seas."

Day was a great talent. I can't think of one single female star today that comes near her.
