No Close Ups?

I understand that the filmmakers were trying to get the most Hong Kong bang for their buck but I felt gypped by the lack of close ups of the main actors- especially dreamy Bill Holden.

The film was shot with the then recently introduced CinemaScope anamorphic lens, which didn't allow for close-ups because of focus problems and depth of field problems. It wasn't until the Panavision lenses were introduced in the early sixties that many of the problems with CinemaScope were cleared up and films began to use more close-ups. David Bordwell has a fascinating chapter on the problems associated with staging in CinemaScope in his book POETICS OF CINEMA (Routledge, 2007).

Thank you. That was a very informative answer to a very intelligent question. I will surely check out that book.
