Curious....

No doubt america was openly racist during the time period that this movie was made. I'm wondering how did they get away with making interracial romance films like this? (Even though the actress in this is caucasian). Like was there controversy, how well were the movies received?
Other examples, such as Sayanora (1955), Toll of the Sea (1922) and others I cant think up of. The only ones I can think of are ones with characters/actresses that are Asian.

The World of Suzie Wong would be another.

It was a time when a lot of GIs had come home from World War II in Asia. They had learned and experienced things in Asia and talked of them when they returned. Some returned with wives. Meanwhile that part of the world with events like the war, the change of government in China in 1949 and the Korean War had become more present to Americans than ever. So it was a natural topic for filmmakers. If you're going to make a movie there it will be first about people so naturally, for credibility's sake, at least some of those people should be Asians. At least Hollywood had moved past the point where the Asians could only serve in the role of the villain.

That's interesting. Yea I knew there would be war brides from that era, and stereotypes that would come out from encounter stories with the women or the prostitutes there...but I can't help but think of the controversy these movies would stir up displaying interracial relationships, like comparing it to LGBT movies of today. Especially since naturally there would be a hatred towards what people would perceive as the enemy. Sometimes its just hard for me to imagine a world back then when people were extremely racist/prejudice than today.

But still funny how films about Asian/White relationships are somewhat more acceptable than blacks/whites.

But yea, this movie especially I couldn't watch some of the scenes where they had the female character put so much emphasis on her being asian, or part asian part european in anything she would say. Made me cringe. Probably meant to make it more believable that the caucasian actress would be mixed...lol

Btw. recently found another such film: House of Bamboo. Seems to have been quite a trend. Appears every studio felt the need to have at least one film of this type at the time.

It's a large ethnically diverse place and what Hollywood chooses to produce is about business and not what some may not agree with. If they didn't think it would make money it wouldn't have been made.
