Ed Slade . . .

. . . possibly the most unnecessary fictional supporting character ever created for a historical movie. You probably don't remember him even if you have seen the movie several times. He's one of Bowie's outfit and takes place in the attack on the ammunition wagons. Bowie introduces him to Jeb when Jeb happens upon Bowie's encampment, and you get the impression that he might be Bowie's lieutenant, along with Ben Evans (Jim Davis). His one line is "Howdy, Jeb" or the equivalent. Yet he never does anything or in anyway that I can see contributes to any scene. The actor who played him in the movie isn't even given credit in IMDB's list of the characters and cast.

Saw the movie again and Ed doesn't even get a line to speak. When Bowie introduces him to Jeb, he just kind of nods and grunts. I don't think you see him again, not even at the party. Instead of Bowie finding the body of "Atkins" (whoever he was) among the Texan dead after the river crossing fight, they could have at least had Bowie find Ed Slade's body, which would at least give the character a heroic (if off-screen) death and explain why we never see him again.
