DVD coming from Olive Films -- eventually

Olive Films has confirmed (as of 7/27/12) that The Last Command is among over 100 films owned by Republic Pictures that the company will eventually be releasing on DVD (and perhaps Blu-ray).

The Republic library -- which includes a number films made by other companies but now controlled by Republic -- is owned by Paramount, which has been licensing much of its classic library for release by Olive during the past two years. Many of the Republic films listed by Olive have been previously released but many others, like TLC, haven't, so it's great to see Olive beginning to aggressively remaster and release many of these classic films.

Whenever an announcement for the release of The Last Command is made we'll post. Meanwhile, the entire list can be found at classicflix.com/olive-complete-list-republic-titles-a-1281.html. The list does not include titles already released or pending (Johnny Guitar, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, High Noon, etc.).

Well, almost five years on and no sign of a DVD from anybody. Hopefully one will materialize sometime. With these boards closing I doubt anyone will see this in the short time remaining, but I thought I should post a final advisory for the completeness of things. And you never know, someone may indeed drop by before the end.

The Last Command is a very fine film -- much better than Wayne's overstuffed 1960 epic or the 2004 remake. Oftentimes a bit less is better. I do hope it shows up on disc sometime.

Meanwhile, in the words of General Santa Anna, "¡Adios!"
