I'm not a big fan of whipping/flogging scenes, but I agree with you on this, and can perhaps offer a bit of an explanation. This was Hawks's first and only wide-screen film and, if you'll notice, he handles the outdoor scenes superbly, and in a way that can only be matched with CG F/X today, but he's totally lost on the interiors. He probably knew this, and it was probably a big problem for him. In fact, the interior scenes all look like de Mille interior scenes, and it was CB de Mille whom Hawks was competing with (in a sense). Hawks wasn't very big on close-ups, which is just as well, since the make-up in this film is really bad.
