Land of the Pharaohs whipping scene

A young Joan Collins,22 when this film was made, gets a good whipping for stepping out of line. All you Catholic school boys out there try to control yourselves. The link is http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4184137455462050511

It's too bad the whipping is so brief -- it should have gone on for at least a dozen or so lashes.

A fine whipping indeed.

What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter.

Now, THAT would have been a great scene. Obviously you're a connoisseur of fine whipping -- or a total pervert, like me!

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

I'm not a big fan of whipping/flogging scenes, but I agree with you on this, and can perhaps offer a bit of an explanation. This was Hawks's first and only wide-screen film and, if you'll notice, he handles the outdoor scenes superbly, and in a way that can only be matched with CG F/X today, but he's totally lost on the interiors. He probably knew this, and it was probably a big problem for him. In fact, the interior scenes all look like de Mille interior scenes, and it was CB de Mille whom Hawks was competing with (in a sense). Hawks wasn't very big on close-ups, which is just as well, since the make-up in this film is really bad.

All the more tantalizing, because Collins had such a sexy back! Undulating abs, too!

I just saw the movie again tonight on TCM.

If this movie was to be remade, I'd suggest Michelle Rodriguez in Joan Collins role and a much more explicit whipping scene.

(note: if Michelle wasn't available, I'd suggest Salma Hayek)

On New York television in the 1970s, channel 2 (WCBS) used to cut the whipping scene -- too much for sensitive New Yorkers, I guess. The joke was that in the 60s the film had been regularly shown on NYC's independent channel 9 (then WOR), which happily left the whipping scene in...even while cutting out other portions to squeeze in commercials.

By the way, poster ErJen-1 was mistaken in his July 5, 2010 post above -- Howard Hawks didn't direct She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. That was John Ford.

Given when it was made I am surprised they had any whipping scene at all. Usually you would hear the whip and see faces and that would be it. Today it would be an entirely different scene. Joan Collins never looked so hot too.

reply

Yes, there had been plenty of films showing men being whipped, but never any showing a woman being whipped...and certainly not as stripped bare as Joan Collins was.
