So funny!

Oh my God! The characters, the screenplay, the setting, everything just worked! My favourite character had to be either Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness) or Mrs Wilberforce (Katie Johnson). They were both just excellent. The main highlight of the film has to be when all the men are trying to kill the sweet old lady and it proves impossible for all! What a classic.

I totally agree! I like your taste in movies:D

Mine would have to be Professor Marcus. So charming - even attractive - and then his mind just slips away and leaves him a very strange man. Fascinating and frightening!

Major Courtney is a close second though. He reminds me of myself with his panic attacks. He was just a lovable character, very innocent and sweet.

Yeah, I agree, professor dorr, it's comedy but you can see even early in the beginning Professor Marcus' flash of maniacal expression.

I've very intentionally avoided watching this one again on TCM lately as I don't ever want to tire of it. Also, I prefer to watch this type of film on a dreary late winter day but today, a hot August day, when I saw TCM was running it again, I couldn't resist. Although I've seen it a dozen times over the years, I had forgot about the opening gags - the baby in the stroller and Mrs Lopsideds first (unexpected) whack at the pipe with the hammer. I had forgotten about these and found myself actually laughing out loud at both !!
Now I've done it though, I'll have to avoid it until at least next February/March (good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise).
Katie Johnson was fantastic - even if for only the hammer/pipe scene.
Anyone else get the feeling that if push came to shove, she coulda handled any one of them one on one ?

The tea party scene cracks me up, Alec Guinness's expression while playing the piano and Herbert Lom being pestered by the old yap over by the window. Classic film.
