Coen bros doing remake

Im sure you all know by now that the Coen Bros are doing a remake of the Peter Sellers/Alec Guiness classic film, The Ladykillers. I trust that they are going to make a good remake, because they are very good, I mean, they have done films such as Fargo and The Big Lebowski, the remake of it must be good.

Oh well, 2 outta 3 ain't bad :-) I was very disappointed with the 're-make'....

They should have left PERFECT alone!

I just watched The Ladykillers, now I am interested to watch the remake. I happened to like Fargo, so hopefully the remake will be good.

Why? The charm and actor's fame of the original is way better than some lame $$$ crap rehash for dumb US teens?

I'm a huge fan of the Coen Brothers, but their remake failed because of the lack of irony. Mrs Wilberforce was a wee, little thing from the Victorian era and Marva Munson was a loud, lumbering woman who looked like she could kick the *beep* out of anyone.

The contrast of these two characters made all the difference in the world. Aside from that, the cast was great in both films and the Coen's are beyond reproach on anything they do. I had thought for a fleeting moment that could actually pull it off. But alas, no.

You ain't got a license to kill bookies and today I ain't sellin any. So take your flunky and dangle

One irony is that Mrs Munson survives not because she kicks the *beep* out of the gang but thanks to a crazy coincidence pretty much reflecting the Coens' outlook on the world.
While Mrs Wilberforce represents the Victorian era, I think Mrs Munson (at least in part) represents the Civil Rights Movement era (e.g. she refers to Martin Luther King and makes "no big hoopdeedoo about denomination"). Of course with that in mind another irony is that she's regularly donating money to Bob Jones University.

The Brothers set an impossible task for themselves in trying to capture the magic of this one.

There have been so many movies made over the years that were based on an interesting premise and should have been entertaining, but failed for one reason or another. Remaking those is a long Hollywood tradition, and has resulted in a number of serious classics. Mutiny on the Bounty with Brando and Laughton comes to mind

What producer or director in his right mind tries to remake perfection? Even if you create perfection, the highest accolade you're liable to get is, 'It's about as good as the original'.

Stupid.

It's amazing to think that this post is 16 years old.

Original Ladykillers by the way = great movie.
