I love this film to death and refuse to watch the remake. I am so grateful I didn't see the remake before I saw this. I walked into the movie with no clue at all where it would go, and as far as I'm concerned that's the only way to approach it.
Some of these terrible remakes have one redeeming feature--they publicize the good original so they can be rediscovered. But the finely crafted plot and pacing of this outstanding caper comedy carries you along so brilliantly, I can't imagine going into the first viewing with an idea of where it will wind up. So, I feel sorry for the people who see the remake first. It's not only a waste of two hours of their lives, but it diminishes the experience of seeing one of the greatest movies ever made.
I don't know what the Coens were thinking when they decided to remake this. But what they did was strip all the charm out of one of the most charming pieces of film ever, and spoil a truly great movie for millions by exposing them to spoilers.
People get banned from this site for spoiling the plot of even a crappy movie, thinking their little comment is worth the price someone who hasn't seen the film pays in reading it. Here the Coen Brothers have spoiled the plot of one of the greatest comedies ever for millions, just because they thought their little exercise in ego was amusing enough to be worth the price. Why haven't we banned them from Hollywood?
