The Old Disney Movies

Now that Disney is doing CGI and live action movies, I miss their old 2-D animation movies like Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, etc. I mean, the new movies are okay (Chronicles of Narnia was perfect), but the old movies are the movies you grew up with. Does anyone else miss the old kind of movies Disney made?

reply

yes,i'm 13 but i never liked disney's latest movies.i agree with you.my favourite were lady and the tramp,lion king,and the jungle book,etc.

reply

I never really liked the Jungle Book. The only latest Disney movie I like is Chronicles of Narnia, but that wasn't even originally Disney's idea (C.S. Lewis was a genius). I miss the old Disney movies.

reply

I also love the old live action movies like The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes, the Shaggy DA (the remakes just can't hold a candle to the originals).

reply

i liked the older disney movies too! But newer ones aren't so bad (Monster's Inc)

<<The only latest Disney movie I like is Chronicles of Narnia, but that wasn't even originally Disney's idea (C.S. Lewis was a genius).>>

But next to none of Disney's ideas were actually original; Lady and the Tramp was the first full-length feature (with a storyline) not based on a previous source. The best Disney movies died with Disney; Lady & the Tramp, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, etc. Some of the '90s stuff was all right, and Pixar is great of course (didn't care for Cars much, tho).. it's too bad, Disney will probably never make movies as good as it used to.

I'm hoping John Lasseter (former Disney animator and later co-creator of Pixar; recently appointed to Disney as Chief Creative Officer) will turn things around. Hang in there, for in a few years, Disney will be making a comeback with traditional 2D animation in "Enchanted," "Rapunzel," and "The Frog Princess." Can't wait until 2009...

Disney's last great animated film was the first 'Lilo and Stitch'. CG is just so cold and sterile, handdrawn has more love to it. Live action isn't that bad un;ess it's a movie based on a Disney Channel sitcom like 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie' or 'Hannah Montanna in Concert'.

I want Sean Whalen! I want him bad!

Im hoping The Princess and the Frog does great in the box office, cause if it does, Disney may continue to make 2D animated movies which I really hope they do. But they need to have good storylines. Not stupid ones like that one made a few years ago. I completely forget what it was called but it was gonna be the last 2D movie, but they decided to do it once more with the princess and the frog.

Yours is a rather old post (almost six years), but I gotta ask.... is your signature referring to Sean Whalen the actor?

reply

Actually, Dumbo was the first Disney feature not adapted from a classic text was it not? Either way, yes, I love old Disney films and I'm really pleased to see the new Winnie the Pooh film looks very much like the classic 60s version.

I think there's a place for both. I love a lot of the newer CGI animated films, both Disney and otherwise, whether it be Shrek or The Incredibles or whatever.

But at the same time I want a balance with traditional, hand-drawn animation. It certainly has a different feel and also has a value in terms of nostalgia.

reply

So do I. I loved Princess and The Frog, very funny and took me back! It's true what another poster had said, Disney's greatest ideas and cartoons died with Walt Disney himself. I like the CGI, it's different, but now also getting old... haha! But its whatever appeals to these generations. Like I said though I enjoy them too, but nothing compares to the classic 2-D ones, they were the best and still are! I also wish they would stop that whole "Limited Time", coming out of the "Vault" crap, I bet you Walt Disney is turning over his grave right now! What a-holes!

but then again, I'm not really sure...

That is what I been hooked on watching lately the old classic Disney movies I grew up on. I enjoy movies like Shrek, Madagascar, but nothing compares to the old Disney.

Oh, if only Disney had kept The Snow Queen 2D like it was supposed to be. With John Lasseter essentially running both Pixar and WD Animation Studios, it would make sense to keep the CG stuff Pixar and the Disney stuff 2D.

On a side note though, I get tired of this misguided belief that 2D animation always equals more heart and artistry while CG equals cash grabbing greed. None of that is true.

I don't mind the Disney films from the past few years (Frozen, Toy Story 3, Princess Diaries 1 + 2, Freaky Friday etc) but I like the older Disney films best.

reply

Why don't they make handdrawn animated movies anymore? Do kids see handdrawn like my friends used to see black and white movies? They think it's old so it's dumb and inferior.

Or is it the studios not wanting to take the time or spend the money to make a handrawn movie?

I hate that everything is computer animated and absolutely nothing is handrawn.

reply

Yeah, I'm sick of this trend too. CGI is fine, but why can't there be room for hand-drawn animation too?

Intelligence and purity.

reply

Well yeah but a few years after your post they did bring out The Princess and the Frog that was both in 2D and also was hand drawn which was something that used to be made with the older movies before they started using computers. Toy Story was the first to be made using all computers without any hand drawn animation. Now a days I don't know if Disney when or if again will make another 2D animated movie, or even hand drawn again, but you never know what the future will bring.
