Kismet on DVD?

As big fan of MGM Musicals (the soundtrack is wonderful) and Howard Keel, I hope the studio bring out "Kismet" as a special edition on DVD. I'm sure, it will have many other fans where want that too....

I'd like to see it on DVD too...if for nothing else, to be able to see it in all its widescreen glory. I bought a used copy of the VHS off eBay a couple years ago, and it's great, but it cries for a DVD release!

Maybe a Howard Keel DVD box set? It could include...
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (a new edition with a new ultra res transfer)
TEXAS CARNIVAL (with Esther Williams)
SHOW BOAT (which screams for a Special Edition, a new ultra res tranfer, and including the 1936 Universal version in the same set)
LOVELY TO LOOK AT (with Red Skelton and Marge & Gower Champion)
KISMET (with restored picture and audio)
JUPITER'S DARLING (also with Esther Williams)

Yes, Jupiters Darling is a wonderfoul movie too. Special Esther Williams Swimming scene "I have dream" is wonderfoul. And the sea hunt scene is thrilling. How was made this big scene?

reply

I'd love to see that also. I just saw Kismet on TCM at 8:30 in the morning of all times. They having a day of Howard Keel movies today (8/30) which I know you would enjoy. They are including "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" which you left out of your boxed set.

Also missing from both your and TCM's selections is a personal favorite of mine "Calamity Jane" wih Doris Day.

Oh my god in 4:3. That's terrible. I will not buying this movie. It was filmed in CinemaScope (with Aspect ratio 2.35 : 1). And also the movie is minimum mixed in Stereo.
I hope really it's a wrong information - or it's maybe the "Kismet"-Version with Marlene Dietrich from 1944?

reply

[deleted]

Ok, it was definitive wrong 4:3. the DVD is in original 2,35:1 Widescreen and in original 5.0 track sound + remastered 5.1
The Picture look very great and has any bonus materials. Yeah!

A question I have: In which scene is the legendary producer Aaron Spelling? He's uncredited as an Beggar.

WB Archives is about to release on Blu-ray. Hopefully a better presentation.

reply

Yeah I noticed that last week. I already own "HIT THE DECK" WB ARCHIVE Blu-Ray and there isn't a big difference between BR and DVD.

It looks like the studios gave up to restoring those "Classic" Titles. And I will be surprised when they would add english subtitles.

reply

Kismet is fully restored, the presentation is essentially flawless.
What exactly are you expecting?

reply

Im expecting good quality on Blu-ray. Specially for a Cinemascope movie,
english subtitles (sorry, Im bit hard hearing).

And yes, I know, Kismet is restored and happy about, thanks I noticed that. Also 42nd Street is great.

But WB Archive released also titles on DVD-R which are not restored without any subtitles - (remember back in 1997 when DVD's have been announced that they will have lot languages (sound AND subtitles) on the Disc.
