The market in this film was not in Petticoat Lane. It was an open air set contructed on a bomb site in Vallance Road, about 1 mile from "The lane". I remeber it well as I lived in the adjoining street and hung around the film set for days watching the action.

I can state catagoricly that information in previous post is not wholly correct. Yes the scenes involving the purchase of the goat (unicorn) was filmed on a bombed site in Vallance Road Bethnal Green on the south east side of the railway tunnel. If you look carefully you will see though the arch the home of "The Kray Twins" Fort Vallance. My uncle's shuttered shop also appears briefly. All the local shop keepers were given the opportunity to display their wares on stalls set up on the bombed site.
As for the greater part of the market scenes they are in "The Lane", and many of the local eccentrics can be seen especially the bearded guy with the Gramophone on a perambulator. At the time there was a large Jewish community, and if you look at the shop signs they are mostly names of that origin.
I feel it should have been in B/W as that's how it felt if you lived there. My home was in Cranberry St. which no longer exsists now a Muslim estate. Historical reference a few hundred yards south the last V11 rocket demolished Hughes Mansions Vallance Rd. in march 1945 killing 134 people.
Yes, I thought that Vallance Road was the home of the notorious Kray family of criminals.
It's interesting, isn't it, that this movie makes no reference at all to the real horrors of London crime. It goes out of its way to suggest that all types get along together just fine, and any criminals who pop up are the comedy sort.
