miscellaneous THOUGHTS

I saw the movie when it first came out and decided to read the book. Memory dims, even mine, but I remember it being a very long novel which spans decaded with Ford, Farr and Bronson.

My dad went to high school with Ford and was surprised when I found Ford's autobiography GLENN FORD BEVERLY HILLS RFD which was written during THE VIOLENT MEN. Peter Ford has a website devoted to his father, and I askemd where I could find a copy of the book but never heard from him. He is, however on the commentary track for BLACKBOARD JUNGLE.

Thanks, but I remember the book as very long and meandering. The only books I go back and read over these days are John Dickson Carr's. I love westerns but they never appealed to me for reading although I'm reading Robert Parker's RESOLUTION at the moment.

I used to know McMurtry years ago when he had a used and rare bookstore in DC, and I read two of three of his westerns. They still didn't appeal to me. He told me he'd written a western for Wayne, Stewart and Fonda, but they didn't want to play old men. So he turned it into LONESOME DOVE. A few years ago we saw Robert Duvall at GW, and he said LD and THE GODFATHER were his two personal favorite films.

I meant for the Ford book. I agree regarding Jubal Troop. Wellman also wrote The Comancheros, which is the same way.

I'm working on a book dealing with Westerns one should watch. JUBAL is in there, as are a good chunk of Glenn Ford's work. He doesn't seem to garner atttention.

One of my favorite Ford westerns is THE MAN FROM COLORADO with William Holden. It's the only time I can remember playing a villain, and it brings out the dark side of his character. THE BIG HEAT with Lee Marvin and Gloria Grahame throwing pots of coffee at each other is another favorite.

My Dad went to high school with Ford and said none of his Army buddies believed him. Ford wrote an autobiography GLENN FORD, BEVERLY HILLS RFD years ago about his film career and how he got his son to eat vegetables by suggesting they grow a garden.

Good luck with the book. One of my favorites is LITTLE BIG HORN(1951) Lloyd Bridges, John Ireland, Marie Windsor and several other B favorites. When I took an introduction to films course I analyzed it for an exam. For somebody used to Roy Rogers westerns, its violence was a shock. In BELLS OF SAN ANGELO when David Sharpe and Dale van Sickel beat up Rogers, you know he'll be back to sing "Happy Trails to You." When the Sioux torture Sheb Wooley in LBH, you know he won't be back to sing THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER.

Never could find an agent for the book, but I will have it posted at Amaaon in a few weeks. It's called Head `Em Off At the Pass! 95 Westerns You Should Watch.
