Shep didn't really believe Pinky. He was upset with him for suggesting such a thing but once the thought was in his mind jealousy took over. He tried to get the other guys to reassure him but they really couldn't. The thought kept eating away at him.
Jubal had given Shep advice about how to treat Mae. At the time it was fine but after what Pinky said it probably took on new meaning. He trusted Jubal but those prone to jealousy can be overcome by it.
When he got home and found his wife alone he felt better but once she said Jubal's name and then lashed out at Shep making him think there was something going on, that's what convinced him. He had no reason to doubt her so he accepted it as true.
