Marty Meets Marty

Rod Steiger played the role of "Marty" on Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse on May 24,1953. Ernest Borgnine would play the classic character of "Marty" in the 1955 film version for which he would win the Academy Award.

And they both get above-the-title billing here. At least the movie Marty gets to slug the TV Marty a couple times. (For the record, I've seen both productions of "Marty" and I think Borgnine's portrayal of the character was superior to Steiger's.) Interestingly, Steiger had co-starred with Brando two years earlier in ON THE WATERFRONT and Glenn Ford would co-star with Brando in TEAHOUS OF THE AUGUST MOON the same year as JUBAL.

I agree that Borgnine was far better than Steiger as Marty (it also helped that he was Italian and homelier!), and it's a fun to see the two Martys meeting in this one movie.

But honestly, the fact that both have their names above the title is nothing exceptional. Both were top stars and you'd expect they'd be listed ahead of the title. As for the Brando connection to Steiger and Ford, sorry, but what's at all "interesting" about that? There's nothing remotely unusual or interesting about the fact that each man co-starred with Brando at different times in different movies. You can find thousands of such examples throughout film history. Ford and Borgnine co-starred in Torpedo Run in 1958, but there's nothing remarkable about that either.
