Why Did... How Come... What ,,,

1. Why did Jubal go to town after escorting Mae home instead of riding back to the camp? Surely he would savvy that his prolonged absence would raise suspicions as to what he was (or wasn't) up to among the other cowboys especially Pinky who disliked him from the start.

2. How come Reb wasn't held to account for his part in Shep's death by lending a gun to Jubal?

3. What most likely was Pinky's fate after he was exposed as the real bad guy? I'm guessing that he was strung up on the swinging hook that was in front of the barn, but am open to all suggestions.

Thanks

The way I see it is:
1. Jubal was planning to leave town. He knows there will be trouble if he stays because of Mae's attraction to him.
2. Pinky persuaded the posse to pursue Jubal because he wanted to kill him. He didn't care about Reb because his only motivation was to track down and kill Jubal.
3.I think you're right-Pinky was strung up on the hook.

You see Reb swinging a rope. They stretched his neck.

I meant Pinky.

Well, maybe Jubal was not necessarily going to run away but after seeing May home he wanted to get away and have a drink at the bar and mull it over. It must be considered a given that the bar was not so terribly far from the Horgan ranch or the cattle camp that Jubal could not have had to be back to camp so late after seeing May safely home and then having some drinks.

Also, I agree about the implication at the end of the film that Pinky was going to be hung...the camera was purposely focused on the rope and hook hanging from the barn and Reb was seen, as previously said, with a rope.

This is an excellent film.

It looks like Jubal wanted to leave town and go to the bar and think about it.

However it was a convenient plot point.

Its that man again!!

I just watched the movie. Jubal definitely tells Reb that he's moving on, just as he had done so many times in the past. He had no intention of going back. Unfortunately, he stayed in that saloon for one drink too many.

Great shot of Bronson with rope.

What was Pinky's fate? For what? Roughing up Mae? Maybe you could say it was attempted murder. You can't prosecute him for spreading rumors.

reply

He did a lot more than just "rough up Mae". He essentially beat Mae to death (and it's all but outright stated that he didn't stick to just beating her either). At best, that's manslaughter; more likely it would just be classed as straight-up murder since I doubt a rope-happy posse would get too hung up on semantics and technicalities - he was seen to be guilty of precisely what they were all perfectly happy to string up Jubal for; there's no way they would have just let Pinky go. Plus there's the fact that there's more than enough room for arguing that had Pinky not slandered Jubal to Shep, Shep would never have become jealous - as the two other ranch hands repeatedly point out both in private and in front of the posse. Pinky is basically a discount Iago: no matter how you spin it, he's ultimately the one most directly responsible for two deaths and another attempted murder. So...yeah, he almost definitely ended up ironically suffering the same fate he was so desperate to hand out to Jubal.
