Roger Moore

Even though it's a small role, it's very nice to see Roger Moore in this. I think he starts out with an Aussie accent at the beginning (I think he did accents and impressions quite well in general), but does not use one later. Anyone notice?

I didn't notice that Moore had anything approximating an Australian accent near the beginning of the movie but I'll listen for it next time. Not just Cyril (Roger Moore) but the rest of Marjorie's family and indeed all the other Australian roles in the movie were spoken with quintessential English accents (maybe some of those actors were actually Australian, I don't know), which of course was standard Hollywood practice in those days. Actually, Eleanor Parker's accent sounds more Australian to me than anyone else's but perhaps it's my imagination.

an Australian accent is similar to a British accent since Australia was colonized by Great Britain.

reply

Relatively speaking, compared to American English, perhaps - even though America was also once colonized by Great Britain (all varieties of English originate there). Nevertheless, it is quite distinct. I'm sure most people from the UK would agree, and many non-native speakers of English can also perceive the difference.

when they made the movie they should have had a dialogue coach on the movie set as they do these days!
