What really started her drinking?

In the film, Lillian started drinking when she learned that her boyfriend David had died and a nurse gave her a drink to calm her. Is that how her drinking really started or was it just written into the film? Was there really a boyfriend David? Unlike the film, where the Lower East Side of New York was shown, the family really lived in Boston.

David really was the love of her life. Poor girl. She's now with him in paradise.

I found this at the much-maligned Wiki:
Prior to her marriages, she was engaged to David Lyons, who died of tuberculosis.

I haven't found anything about her alcoholism. I've never read the book though my younger sister did during the time that she was hooked on biographies.
