Great movie but no sense of period at all

Couldn't they have made at least some attempt at authenticity? Roth, pushed by her mother, made her show-business debut in 1916 at the age of 6. She rose to fame as a young woman in the late 1920s/early 1930s. It's completely jarring to have the whole film look as if it's set in the 1950s.

I have always hated when films about the past do not totally meet the accurate hairdos and clothing of the time . I used to think it had to do with the actress or actor demanding present day hair and clothes. Now I just don't understand.

The points are well taken. As for the reasons, I believe that in at least some instances budget constraints are a factor.

But you know what, I recently watched this film (or most of it. TCM cut off the ending) and I didn't really notice the lapses. At the same time it probably would have been an even better film with good period detail.

I noticed that as well. But overall a decent film. The first part of the film looked more 1930's than 1910 -19.
