I didn't catch this in 'High Sierra' so I don't know if the gaff was in the original script or not but I got a chuckle from the line when I heard the reporter make this observation.

And the Mexican desert in '"Treasure of the Sierra Madre" was frigidly hot !

Yes, that same line is in the original 1941 version. They used the exact same shooting script for the 1955 remake.

The line might not be as paradoxical as it might first seem. In Dante’s 14th Century poem Inferno, the ninth (and most severe) circle of Hell is reserved for the treacherous. This circle is further sub-divided into four increasingly harsh ‘rounds’. Punishment in all of these rounds involves being partially or wholly encased in ice. Satan, according to the poem, resides at the very centre, waist deep in ice.

I remember an episode of "Bonanza" in which there was a town called San Diablo (Saint Devil). Writers not paying attention.
