I watched The Street With No Name (1948) last night, and am watching the House of Bamboo (1955) right now without realize the latter is a remake of the former. Bamboo seems to have better acting, directing, and is more beautiful, but I tend to prefer The Street with No Name for its grit, dirt, and violence.
Oh yes, 'THE STREET WITH NO NAME' is a much more authentic NOIR film in my lowly and wretched opinion. Made earlier during the stronger part of the NOIR period and in a MUCH more NOIRish setting too!
Already being familiar with the earlier film, I didn't care as much for this one. Although, hey, it IS directed by Sam Fuller for Goodness sake, but still, for me Robert Stack is way too wooden in the role. The film works though, but nor really as a true NOIR.
So, I guess it depends on what one prefers; more of a genuine dark NOIR, then the earlier one. More snazzy Japanese location and Fuller's direction, then the newer one.
But, I do very much agree with you!

BTW, if you like DeForest Kelly, you should check out another, and in my lowly opinion, better NOIR film called 'FEAR IN THE NIGHT' Although it is a remake of the superiour film with Edward G. Robinson, still, it is the most leading role I've ever seen him in other than STAR TREK. I have the movie; it's pretty good and he does a pretty decent job in it. Whereas in this film here he looks so wooden that he almost makes Robert Stack look like he's doing The Lambada...
Thanks kindly; I got it from a Science Fiction book by Ursula K. Le Guin that I read when I was about 12. It impressed me so much that I've incorporated the title into my screen names, e'mail, and web site
CHEERS!

Yeah, that 1980 PBS production was very good; that version was more effects oriented and more 'Science Fictiony' The 2002 film with James Caan was also excellent, but they presented it in a more low key, cerebral way that accented the more psychological and dramatic elements. Both are excellent in different ways...
