Flat As a Pancake

I don't know how they did it, but a movie with Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell (two firecrackers!) to say nothing of Russ Tamblyn turned out to be a dud. Boring. Flat as a pancake. Zilch. Zippo. Nada. I'd love to hear what Debbie Reynolds has to say about the making of this movie.

I saw this today for the first time. I'm a huge fan of movie musicals and it takes a lot for me to say a film didn't work. Well this one didn't! I felt bad for them all. Especially Ann Miller. 'You don't do this after you've been in a film like 'On the Town'. The opening dance? number with Tony, Russ and Vic in the ship's kitchen was beyond embarrassing. There're 4 amazing dancers in this. Ann Miller, Russ Tamblyn, Debbie Reynolds & Jane Powell. Yet so far I haven't seen any of them do any real dancing and the movie's been on almost an hour. Maybe it delivers at the end but I was thinking the choreographer got sick the first day. Everybody's been doing the steps you do the first week in kiddie dance class! There's also no chemistry between those paired up either!

How the hell was Walter Pidgeon talked into doing this? The admiral was clearly a light comedic role but Walter played it as though he were doing William Shakespeare! Overall the fact that we get to see Fosse & Champion dance together makes the time watching it worth it.

You must be thinking of Give A Girl A Break. Neither Gower Champion nor Bob Fosse are in this film.

To me, the big problem with this film is what passes for acting from the leads -- Tony Martin and Ann Miller. Neither of them seemed to be putting any effort at all into their work, and I think it reflects onto the rest of the cast. Had they had stronger leads, everything else would have clicked into place. The one saving grace in this film is the "Hallelujah" finale, but it's not enough to save the film.
