As an Admirer of the Real Salvation Army ...

... I am not pleased at Sergeant Sarah and her people dedicating so much attention to professional gamblers when the real followers of Gen Booth work so hard on problems that are infinitely more important.

It was a group of mission workers - "Save A Soul Mission". Nothing to do with Salvation Army or Gen Booth.

Nowhere in Runyon's story or in this movie was Salvation Army mentioned.

TVTropes lists them as an expy of the Sally Army

This isn't a documentary, but a romantic musical comedy. And the creators worked hard to succeed at that.

Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.

Professional gamblers aren't a problem. It's amateur gamblers.
