Why two monsters?

this was the first Godzilla sequel and first toho movie to feature two monsters fighting. So i'm wondering, what was the inspiration to have Godzilla fight another giant monster?

I don't know, but they really set the stage for a half century of great Toho films!

2 for the price of 1 sells better

Plus a sequel with Godzilla alone would just be a rehash of the original film except for the ending.

This always seemed like the most logical explanation to me. They probably didn't have much time to really develop a strong plot, since they wanted to capitalize on Godzilla's success, so they thought "how can we make it different? two monsters attacking?" and it simply makes sense that they would end up meeting and fighting.

Before I really became super familiar with Godzilla, I would always think that Mothra, Rodan, and/or Godzilla vs King Kong came out before Godzilla Raids Again. It seemed more logical to follow up a monster movie with a different monster movie, or by taking a popular monster and putting it in a movie with another popular monster. That's not the case though, huh.

Whatever the inspiration for the vs model, it was ridiculously successful.

I have no idea, but I thought I throw out there that having two monsters fight is probably easier than having a monster fight a group of people because the monsters are on the same scale.

I don't know why they chose two monsters to fight each other, but I'm glad they did. This series has introduced me to some of the coolest monsters in history.

Maybe Toho was worried they'd just be rehashing the first one. Or that people might get bored with just Godzilla all the time. Did they plan a franchise that far back? The film-makers were fans of KING KONG (1933), and Kong battled other giant creatures. Maybe it was just a good idea to stay fresh.

The nuclear weapon metaphor also seems to be less blatant this time around. Keep in mind I've only seen the US version.

Why ask why? Try Bud Dry.

Does anybody else remember that silly 'dry beer' phase that swept the U.S. for about 45 minutes in the mid-1990s?

Rillytho...

The original 'Godzilla' featured a monster coming ashore and destroying a major city, for reasons unknown. If 'Godzilla Raids Again' had been essentially the same movie, there wouldn't have been much to sell it on.

But TWO monsters AND city trashing, PLUS the added attraction of what was essentially professional wrestling? THAT was the big idea.

- Crazy. All crazy but I'm.
