Okay, maybe I missed something (someone please help)

I just saw the Japanese version, thanks to Classic Media, and I was very confused about one thing: Tsukioka and Hidemi were a couple right? They were engaged? At least that's what I picked up (I was very tired when I watched it and reading the subtitles didn't help). The picture of the girl in Kobayashi's diary is Hidemi? I was just confused about this whole subplot. Was it a love triangle like in Gojira, or did Kobayashi sercretly like her? Did he not know about Tsukioka? I'm just so confused, maybe watching it again will clear it up. Can someone please help?

Yeah, I have to admit I was a bit confused by that as well. I don't think it was a love triangle, but I doubt Tsukioka wouldn't have told Kobayashi about the engagement. Kobayashi probably would've been his best man at the wedding or something. Maybe Kobayashi just secretly liked Hidemi but knew enough not to tell her out of respect for his friendship with Tsukioka. Maybe someone else can spread some light on this subject.

The girl Kobayashi had a picture of was not Hidemi, it was another girl. Who it is isn't really clear, because this was very poorly inserted into the story.

Sorry, my bad. I'm glad someone cleared that up for me though. I could never really tell if the photo was of Hidemi or another girl, something to do with the pigtails in the picture without her having them before. Toho must not have had time to develop the story before their film schedule ended or something like that.

Well Godzilla Raids Again came out in Japanese theaters about six months after the original Godzilla, so the entire film was obviously a rush job.

I saw it last night and came to the boards to get this cleared up. The last scene of Kobayashi and Hidemi certainly had the earmarks of them being in love with each other but not wanting to confess their love due to she was engaged to Tsukioka. Earlier when she was announced at Tsukioka's fiance, she seemed very disturbed. It would have been a very compelling love story as Kobayashi was kind of a clown: not the obvious leading man type who always gets the girl.

And that ending was very very abrupt! I saw the American version.
