Michael Wilding as Prince 'Charming' Charles

IS IT ME, or does anyone thing Wilding with a bit long in the tooth for this role? Besides that...he wasn't as handsome as was needed for this story? Anyone agree?

Am I spoiled?

He was over 40 so I'd agree with the "bit long in the tooth" comment but I think he was very handsome. He looked masculine which I like, rather than the pretty good looks that people seem to favour these days.

My question is, how does the son of a Duke get to be a Prince?

Lewincon,

This is a "special role" in that it requires him to be pretty instead of handsome, wouldn't you say? It IS a fairy tale, after all?

As for the royal lineage problem, it was, alas again, a mythical fairy tale land in Europe of old. Yes?

Not sure I understand what you mean by "special role" in asteriks like that. And in fairytales it's usually the handsome prince, not the pretty boy prince.

And there's no reason to disregard royal lineage because it's mythical. The prince's father could just as easily have been a king instead of a duke. Alas indeed.

Well, the Royal Family in Britain has a Prince, who is also a Duke, Prince Charles. When, on the accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1952, he became heir apparent, Prince Charles automatically became Duke of Cornwall under a charter of King Edward III dating back to 1337, which gave that title to the Sovereign's eldest son. (The Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is Heir Apparent to the throne).

Yes, Leslie Caron speaks fondly of him in her autobiography. She said he wanted her to complain about his casting, thereby forcing MGM to replace him. She said simply: ''I didn't comply''.

I watched this for the first time on TCM last night. It's kind of creaky, but Leslie Caron is adorable and I found Michael Wilding surprisingly attractive, sexy, even. Maybe it was the tights?

As for his age, this was the era of older actors--Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, etc--being paired with much younger women.
