Jeff Chandler's relationship with the older couple

He lived with them, and was always with them when they were out. Was he WITH WITH them both? Does the book go into more details? Thoughts?

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

Oh, no, I don't think that was ever meant to be implied at all! (Though I personally imagined that Cecil Kellaway's character was gay and didn't mind getting an eyeful of Jeff Chandler---ha!)

Rather, I just took it that they were a pair of grifters, a mature couple who "sponsored" young good-looking men by providing them with some living expenses. Of course, this sponsorship came with the understanding that the young men would romance/seduce older women in order to fleece them of some money, which would then be turned over to Osbert and Queenie.

It's really a rather surprisingly sordid set-up! You can see that by the mid fifties the production code was breaking down and Hollywood filmmakers could get away with a lot more than they would have been able to do just a few years earlier.

They needn't have worried about the code. It is all kind of subtle.

I thought Jeff Chandler was sponging off the couple because he sure made himself at home everywhere he went. But of course he is replaced by another beach-bum once Jeff Chandler takes up with Joan Crawford. So it seems as though they wanted a younger man to get introduced to wealthy widows.
